Korea's Prime Minister's Office announced Tuesday (Sept. 17) that Prime Minister Han Seung-soo will visit the United States from Monday to Friday next week to attend the 63rd U.N. General Assembly's opening in New York.

The office said in a media release that Prime Minister Han will attend the opening of the U.N. General Assembly and present the Korean government's position in his keynote address on the U.N. Millennium Development Goals, the food crisis, climate change, the human rights situation, and North Korea's nuclear programs and inter-Korean relations.

This year marks the midpoint of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals, which aim to cut poverty in half by 2015. The goals were set in 2000 and endorsed by 189 U.N. member states and over 23 international organizations. These goals also include measures to reduce child mortality rates, to fight epidemic diseases and to form a global development partnership.

Han will also preside over one of the three roundtables on the sustainability of the environment, and will participate in another roundtable on poverty and hunger to demonstrate Korea's full support. The third roundtable will focus on education and health.

Han will engage in bilateral talks with major partner countries and will meet U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.N. Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann.

His schedule includes a discussion with business representatives of Korea and the United States regarding the bilateral free trade agreement and meetings with Korean residents, Korean correspondents, and interviews with reporters, according to his office.
