Seoul, Beijing agree to enhance energy cooperation

South Korea's Prime Minister Han Seung-soo met with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Seoul Tuesday (Aug. 26), agreeing to boost energy and economic cooperation between the two countries, the Prime Minister's Office said.

Prime Minister Han and President Hu reaffirmed their determination to work together in creating a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, and also discussed ways of enhancing economic ties between the two countries, especially in the field of energy, the Prime Minister's Office said in a media release.

China has been seeking closer ties with Seoul and is currently South Korea's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade totaling $145 billion as of last year, according to government data.

The Prime Minister's Office said that Han and Hu discussed cooperative energy buying and saving, and they also agreed to cooperate for the successful hosting of the World Expos slated for 2010 in Shanghai and 2012 in Yeosu, respectively. Yeosu is a coastal city in South Korea.

Hu, on a two-day trip to Seoul, met with President Lee Myung-bak Monday, discussing bilateral relations and nuclear disarmament process in North Korea.

The summit was held one day after the 16th anniversary of the establishment of Seoul-Beijing diplomatic ties.
