The Prime Minister's Office said Tuesday (Aug. 26) that Korea's Yeosu and the Chinese city of Shanghai agreed to work closely with each other to successfully host the 2010 and 2012 World Expos.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed between the organizing committees of the two cities and trade promotion agencies, calls for the events to be used to expand bilateral trade, investment and cultural exchanges.

Korean Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and Chinese President Hu Jintao exchanged the MOU in Seoul on Tuesday.

Cho Hwan-eik, head of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), said the two Expos should be used to strengthen ties between the close trading partners.

China is Korea's top export market as well as one of the top destinations for investment.

KOTRA said that it will establish a 6,000-square-meter wide Korea Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo that will run from May 1 to the end of October 2010. Yeosu, located 455 kilometers south of Seoul will host its Expo from May 12 to Oct. 12, 2012.

Yeosu and Shanghai both bid for the 2010 Expo, with the later winning the right in late 2002. Yeosu applied again and was granted the right by the Paris-based Bureau of International Expositions in November 2007.
