The roundtable was attended by Korea Society President Evans Revere, former U.S. ambassador to Seoul Donald Gregg, Vice President of the Council on Foreign Relations Gary Samore, Newsweek Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Richard Smith, and other Korea experts in the United States. The Prime Minister said the South Korean government wishes to see a peaceful solution to the North Korean nuclear issue within the framework of the six-party nuclear talks and inter-Korean relations based on practicality and productivity.
The Prime Minister said that the South Korean government is striving to practice a diplomacy of contributing to and winning trust from the international community with a view to becoming a "mature global state." He also said that South Korea is intensifying support for developing nations, the biggest victims of worldwide energy, food and environmental crises. South Korea is actively joining international efforts to respond to the climate change, and promoting the vision for low carbon and green growth, the Prime Minister added.
The Prime Minister also expressed the hope that the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement will be ratified by the U.S. Congress at an early date. He later listened to roundtable participants' views on South Korea's desirable responses to various future challenges, ways of developing inter-Korean relations, and ways to strengthen Seoul-Washington relations.
