At a Saturday discussion titled "Reviving Economic Growth," attended by world leaders including British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Han emphasized that there must be international cohesion for the world to recover from the current economic crisis. "Looking back on Korea's experience of overcoming a foreign exchange crisis, I think this crisis can work as an economic opportunity," the Korean Prime Minister said.
For ways to strengthen "international cohesion," Han called for an enlarged currency swap network meant to assist emerging economies. He also stressed the G20's function in uniting global efforts to fight the economic crisis. He also urged the world economic leaders not to skimp on official development assistance for vulnerable economies for the time being.
During the 3-day forum, Prime Minster Han took part in various economic discussions, including those titled "Death of the Washington Consensus" and "A Silver Lining to the Financial Cloud." He also met with the heads of the United Nations, the OECD, the WEF, City Group and HSBC, and explained to them the soundness of the Korean economy and Korea's economic policy to fight the international financial crisis.
At the 2009 Korea Night, arranged by the Federation of Korean Industries at a local Swiss hotel, Han said that very few nations will successfully overcome the financial crisis. "Although sacrifice is inevitable, we will eventually surmount the crisis through international cooperation," the prime minister said.
Seizing the opportunity provided by the economic forum, Prime Minister Han successfully promoted Korea's healthy economy, the country's green growth policy, and its co-chairmanship of the next Group of Twenty (G20) meeting, said his office.
