"The Republic of Korea, at the vanguard of human rights policy in Asia, will expand its role in the human rights field around the world with pride and a sense of responsibility," Han said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the World Civic Forum co-hosted by a local university and a U.N. agency.
Han particularly pledged efforts to ensure equality for migrant blue-collar workers and brides who come from developing Asian nations to marry South Korean men. He also said Seoul will closely observe the dismal human rights condition in North Korea.
"Our government is making its utmost efforts to build a community of equality where migrant workers and wives of international marriages can live without being discriminated against," he said.
"We have also been actively participating in the U.N. Human Rights Council and other international rights agencies to help resolve international human rights issues, including issues in North Korea."
The World Civic Forum is co-hosted by Kyung Hee University and the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs and continues until Friday.
