Your Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Distinguished members of the Kuwaiti delegation, and distinguished guests, It is a great honor and privilege to have with us tonight Your Highness Nasser, Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait. On behalf of the Korean people and government, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to Your Highness and the members of the Kuwaiti delegation. Your Highness, Our meeting this afternoon was very productive and fruitful, demonstrating how far-reaching the relations between our two countries have grown since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1979. I was particularly impressed by the insightful views and foresight of Your Highness on various areas of mutual interest. Indeed, the many years of political leadership and diplomatic acumen of Your Highness were felt throughout our lengthy discussion. Taking this opportunity, I would also like to commend His Highness Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, for his eminent leadership in achieving political development and architecting an economic miracle—creating a paradise on desert sands. Korea and Kuwait share relatively young diplomatic history of 30 years. Yet, our two countries have seen a marked development in our bilateral relations, especially in construction and plant fields. As we moved into the 90s, our economy-focused relations diversified to military and cultural realms. Korea participated in the Gulf War in 1990 as part of the multinational forces and continues to station its “Daiman” troop in Kuwait. Currently, our two countries are entertaining dynamic and cooperative relations in a wide range of areas and are working to become closer and even more reliable partners. Your Highness, To step up our bilateral relations to a more strategic and comprehensive level, we need to nurture our cooperative momentum through a set of joint endeavors and shared vision for the future. With this in mind, the Korean government recently took the initiative to launch an organization called the “Korea-Arab Society” with hopes of this Society serving as a mechanism for enhancing mutual understanding of each other’s culture and tradition and for promoting multi-faceted cooperation. This past May, we had the honor of receiving Her Highness Princess Hussah of Kuwait on the occasion of the Launching Ceremony of the Korea-Arab Society. And, as part of our efforts to expand our cultural relations with Kuwait, and to a greater extent with the Arab world, the Korean government hosted an Arts Exhibition featuring a collection of paintings from Kuwait in early July. The Korean government appreciates the Kuwaiti government’s contributions in this regard, and looks forward to Kuwait’s leading role in the Korea-Arab Society. Your Highness, This afternoon, our two countries reached a broad consensus on cooperation in a wide-range of areas spanning trade, construction, investment, energy, environment and sports. I am especially pleased to note that our two countries are effectively working together on “Knowledge Sharing Program” with a view to contributing to Kuwait’s Five Year Development Plan. I do hope our cooperation will work in maximum synergy and open avenues for further cooperation. Your Highness and distinguished guests, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Kuwaiti government for its cooperation and support in multiple bilateral and international issues, and hope that the two nations will continue to jointly address the challenges that they face and build the path to a more stable and prosperous future. Your Highness, Your visit to Korea will be a catalyst for further strengthening the existing friendship between Kuwait and Korea and will resonate in the minds of the Korean people. I sincerely hope that Your Highness and your delegation have a successful visit, and take home with you pleasant memories of Korea. Your Highness, Distinguished guests, To the good health of Prime Minister Nasser and the eternal prosperity of the State of Kuwait, and everlasting friendship between our two peoples, I would like to propose a toast. Lee Nakhba! Min Ahjel Sadaqa!
